  • Seek And Ye Shall Find…Something Irrelevant

And you thought I made this stuff up…   A couple of posts ago I was bemoaning spam comments being posted to this blog, and posited a scenario where people were looking for videos of dwarves blowing goats and found my site by mistake.  Well, sure enough, it’s happened. I have some basic statistics software running against my site, which tells me (amongst other things) what sites have referred visitors to mine (I mentioned this last time) and also what search terms people used when they were directed to my site by Google (96% of the time) Yahoo (2%), or one of the… Read more

  • Built To Spill, Warehouse Houston

Built To Spill are another band I can’t believe are playing venues the size of the Warehouse in Houston (albeit in the ‘Ballroom’ which is reasonably larger than the room I saw The Black Angels in).  They should be huge, and playing to an audience of thousands, not the four- or five-hundred college students who barely filled the Ballroom. Support band was the Meat Puppets, who I knew nothing about save some notion of a tenuous link between them and Nirvana (which is itself not necessarily a good thing – Nirvana are horribly overrated).  Like Nirvana, there’s three of them… Read more

  • The world may be flat, but it still takes too long to fly across it

Much as I dislike air travel (now that the ‘improved’ security measures have made it such a miserable, demeaning experience), the long intercontinental flights do have one advantage: I get to read for eight hours straight. On a recent trip back to Blightly, I finally finished reading Steven Thomas Friedmann’s The World Is Flat Release 2.0 (that’s “Second Edition” to the incognoscenti). This was recommended to me by a colleague, and although I usually eschew such advice or end up regretting not doing so, this one was actually a pretty good read.  The book is basically a treatise on the globalization of everything –… Read more

  • Pygmy-minded spammers really get my goat

I read an article about Facebook yesterday, where the author was concerned about its use for ‘targeted advertising’. It seems that FaceBook users are blithely listing their favorite films, books, bands, and foods, and stating their age, location, and a bunch of other ‘personal’ information, unaware of the fact that this information is being used to serve up ‘relevant’ adverts.  List your favorite film as “Pulp Fiction”?  Don’t be surprised to see an advert for Tarantino’s latest (and no doubt inferior) movie pop up when it makes its rapid trajectory to DVD release.    Post an entry saying only Ritz Crackers can… Read more

  • Dress Code: Indifference

When I left Europe last year, as part of my move-induced personal property purge, I threw out seven or eight suits that had seen better days.  A couple of these had worn out years previously, I just couldn’t bear to part with them (hey, these were all Paul Smith, and I was very attached to them).  But the others all seemed to wear out around the same time (regardless of how long I’d had them for), and all in the same place (the arse).  It took me a while to figure this out, but I think it was caused by… Read more
