Netflix and…freak out
I’ve never really bought into the whole Netflix thing. Partly because I refuse to pay to stream stuff that is already available on demand (which most of Netflix’s (non-original) content is), and partly because I just don’t watch enough TV to justify it. But my two eldest have become avid users – my daughter mooching off a friend’s account, and my son paying for his own subscription – although as I am his only source of income I guess I was really paying for that, anyway… But in a moment of weakness, I decided to get a Netflix account myself,… Read more

(G)rant me the serenity…
This year I’m trying to be a better person. Part of this is becoming less intolerant of others. This is going to be really hard, as apparently I have a lot of pent-up frustration and a bit of a temper. So let me try to purge it all in one go, and then I can move on. David Guetta: No amount of dry ice and lasers will detract from the fact that you’re just a disc jockey, and only one step away from someone’s leery uncle with a ‘mobile disco’ in his van who does weddings and birthday parties. Extended Warranties: Putting the ‘con’ in ‘consumer electronics’
At the risk of sounding older than my tender 43 years: They don’t make ’em like they used to. Consumer electronics, that is. Last month my TV finally packed up (and within a month of getting my surround-sound in place, FFS!). This is a Toshiba 50″ plasma flat screen, which I bought for the not inconsiderable sum of $2,000 three years ago (actually as a 10-year anniversary present for the wife – ever the romantic, eh?). About a year ago one of the HDMI ports stopped working, which was irritating but not the end of the world (it has a… Read more

AT&T Are Shit
(Sorry, I can’t think of a witty title, because this just isn’t funny…) About a month ago, a representative from AT&T called round offering me their Uverse service free on a couple of month’s trial. This is a combined cable TV and internet service, and although I already used AT&T’s DSL service for my internet connection, I’d shied away from the cable TV service as a friend of ours round the corner had had bad experiences with AT&T. The rep told me that they had since upgraded their network to fibre-optic, and I’d have an optic cable running right into… Read more

Tomorrow’s World Finally Arrives
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. I’m a complete whore for technology. I wouldn’t quite put myself in the nerd/geek camp (although some would) but I do love the good, practical use of technology. And with the convergence of a couple of new-ish technologies, I’ve finally turned my home into something that could have featured on Tomorrow’s World – albeit back in the seventies. It started with the recent purchase (as a 10th wedding anniversary present) of a new TV – a 50″ Plasma HD TV, which now hangs on the wall above the fireplace (where it doesn’t look… Read more
