  • He gets pulled over by the police, but you’ll never believe what happened next!

Well, I guess it was inevitable, but I finally earned myself another traffic ticket. This is almost 3 years after my last ticket, which is a personal record, so I guess I can’t complain. But, surprise, surprise, it wasn’t for speeding! Which itself is a minor miracle, as I was going 85 mph as I passed the copper who pulled me over… In my defense, I was actually just trying to put a bit of distance between me and the asshole who seemed determined to have his truck mount my car and produce a mini. Though to be fair to… Read more

  • Peddling my Wheres

Last week, my car started getting through antifreeze faster than it was getting through gas; I’d fill up the radiator and before I’d gone a couple of miles the Radiator light was on and I’d left a trail of blue liquid all up and down the road. This being Texas, there’s ample opportunity to overheat, so I thought I’d better get it seen to. I’m a one (crappy) car family, and the nearest Chevrolet service center is some 5 miles away, so I figured I’d strap my bike to the back of the car and drive it round on Monday… Read more

  • A yearly cycle

I’m not really one for new year’s resolutions (on account of my life being so perfect already), but I’ve been meaning to start cycling into work again when I get the opportunity. Today that opportunity arose, so given that this is the first work day of the new year, I’m claiming this as my new year’s resolution. I used to cycle into the work back in the day (well, 3 or 4 years ago), and I’ve cycled longer distances in the meantime (it’s pretty much a flat 10 miles to the office), but somehow it seemed longer and harder this… Read more

  • Hit (it) from behind

I guess it had to happen sooner or later, but I was finally involved in a car accident on the I-10. And no, it wasn’t my fault. I was driving home after a particularly stressful day at work (where I had to berate one of my direct reports for falling asleep at his desk – and I’m not really one for confrontation, so that was really tough for me), pootling along in the fast lane at just around the speed limit, when my car got hit from behind. I pulled over onto the shoulder (thankfully they have one on the… Read more

Today is the 4th July, which is a public holiday here in the U.S. (officially, it’s Independence Day, although everyone just calls it “4th July” which makes me think they’ve forgotten exactly what they are celebrating).  It’s probably the biggest public holiday of the year, which means that just about everything grinds to a halt.  Except for me;  I’m still in work.  My colleagues couldn’t understand why I (a Briton) wasn’t out celebrating Independence Day, too.  “Well, what are you celebrating independence from?”  I still think we should push for 200 years’ worth of back-taxes… The up-side to working on a public… Read more
