It’s a weekness
This last year (2012), as part of my household’s austerity measures, I determined to limit myself to purchasing only one CD a week. I had a nasty habit of buying CDs in spurts, by the dozen, so this seemed like a reasonable way of both limiting my purchases and spreading said purchases over time. Although I did succeed in doing both of these things, it didn’t work out quite the way I had planned. I’d reasoned that there were only so many new releases I tended to buy, so I could use the ‘dry’ weeks to bolster my back-catalog collection.… Read more

Thank god it’s only once every four years…*
Today I checked off another one of the tasks on my ‘Americanization’ list (note how I used a zee there!) by voting in a presidential election – a right conferred upon only U.S. Citizens (I naturalized in 2009), and only taken away if you’re a convicted felon (which I’m not). But as noted in previous posts, they really should be a bit more selective, as there are a lot of stupid people who really shouldn’t be allowed to vote, judging by the number of slack-jawed, shoddily-dressed dimwits trying to get into the polling station through the out door despite the… Read more

Fun With Servers – Part 1*
A couple of years ago, for the fun of it, I wrote a book on UPK 3.5. The latest version of UPK (11.1) has now been available for several months, and although my current client doesn’t have it yet, I keep getting asked for an update to my book. Also, in the spirit of being a true ‘consultant’, I thought I’d better stay at least one step ahead of my client, who are upgrading soon, and learn about UPK 11 before I need to teach them about it. UPK 11.1 can run as a stand-alone product on a single PC,… Read more

Who would break a butterfly on a wheel?
Recently I moved back to my old work location, which is significantly closer to home. Ten miles, to be exact. Last time I worked at this particular location I got into the habit of cycling to work, and thought it might be nice to start cycling in again – especially as there’s rumor they may move my project to another location some 40 miles away by the end of the year so I really ought to make the most of it while I still can. As it’s been a couple of years since I cycled more than round the block… Read more

Love just ain’t enough
So the people of North Carolina have voted to ban same-sex marriage. Well bravo for bigotry. In fact, the people of North Carolina have done more than just ban it. Same-sex marriage has been illegal in North Carolina for the past 16 years; this vote just makes it that much harder to ever get it legalized. So it’s not really a case of North Carolina stopping something that was going on because they didn’t like it, but more a matter of adding insult to injury, just out of pure spite. Not that North Carolina are alone in banning same-sex marriages… Read more
