  • 65 Minutes of Magic

Last Sunday I realised another one of my ambitions and went to see Mogwai in concert.  They were playing as part of the Domino festival in Brussels, at the Ancienne Belgique (a great venue!). Although I only cared about seeing Mogwai, I figured that while I’d forked out EUR22.00 I may as well catch some of the other bands on the bill. I got there in time to catch Wolf Eyes, whom I’d never heard, but had read some good press on. Sadly, they turned out to be just unlistenable noise – the kind of shouty faux-deep vocals you get… Read more

  • The Song Sometimes Remains The Same

OK, now I know my iPod is screwing with me.  I have it on ‘shuffle everything’ mode, and it just played All I Really Want To Do by Bob Dylan (from the 1968 album Another Side Of Bob Dylan), immediately followed by World Party’s version of the same song (from the 1986 album Private Revolution). [Out of interest, Dylan does it better…] Now, I know there is a 1-in-7,807 chance of this happening – small but plausible – so I could accept it, but yesterday it played The Mission’s version of Like A Hurricane (from The First Chapter, 1987) followed… Read more

  • An Apple All Day Keeps The Boredom Away

Now this is why I love technology.  This weekend I picked up an Apple AirPort.    This is handy little gadget that lets you connect your PC to your stereo wirelessly. It’s a pretty good device, and in theory very simple to set up – it will effectively set up a home wireless network for you just by plugging it in. Unfortunately I already have a wireless network, which kind of confused it, and my wireless network is achieved though the use of a wireless router and not a wireless card in my PC itself (big difference, apparently). The instructions that… Read more

  • No, really, they are are out to get me…

My car sprang a fairly serious oil leak (to the point where it was getting through oil faster than petrol, and I was leaving a trail all down the road).  I’d noticed the oil light flashing on and off when I drove into work on Friday morning.  So I topped it up with a gallon of Esso Superlube (company man to the last!) before I left work, but the oil light was flashing again before I was halfway home.  I was just wondering where I’d find a garage open on a Saturday (this is Belgium, after all…), when the police… Read more

  • Live fast, live long, as a rough-looking corpse

I’m not one for simply quoting from other internet resources (go do your own searching!) but this, from the Guardian Online is just too funny to let pass. Last week the Rolling Stones played a huge, free concert in Rio de Janeiro (apparently so Mick Jagger’s last (known) lovechild could “see what daddy does for a living” – here’s a newsflash, kid: he struts around in a leotard pretending he’s 40 years younger than he is). The Guardian covered the event (nice work if you can get it), interviewing several locals about the concert. One of those they spoke to… Read more
