Saved The Radio Star"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Another month, another 10 free downloads from the iTunes Store courtesy of Belgacom.\u00c2\u00a0 Last month I went for building <a title=\"The Best Free Compilation From My Youth...Ever\" href=\"http:\/\/www.planetmanuel.com\/dirk\/?p=55\">the perfect compilation from my youth<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 This month\u00c2\u00a0I took a diffferent approach.<\/p>\n<p>Regular readers will know that I listen to <a title=\"3WK Free-Range Alternative Internet Radio\" href=\"http:\/\/www.3wk.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3wk Internet Radio<\/a> quite a lot.\u00c2\u00a0 Whenever I hear something I really like, I make a note of it on my handheld, and then whenever I&#8217;m next in a record store or on Amazon.com and stuck for something to spend my hard-earned moolah on, I&#8217;ll whip out the list and pick something from it.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes I hear a couple of things from the same band, and only like the one track, or I listen to snippets of the whole album on Amazon and don&#8217;t like the whole thing enough to justify buying it.\u00c2\u00a0 Sometimes\u00c2\u00a0I just can&#8217;t justify buying another armful of CDs.\u00c2\u00a0 Whatever the reason, I&#8217;ve got a list of odd tracks I liked when I heard them, and don&#8217;t want to buy the full-length they&#8217;re taken from.\u00c2\u00a0 So this month I decided to pick 10 tracks from this list.\u00c2\u00a0 Some of these I couldn&#8217;t even remember how they went,\u00c2\u00a0 but for the sake of a free download, what did I have to lose?\u00c2\u00a0 The ten (in no particular order) are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Faultline<\/strong>, <em>Where Is My Boy<\/em><br \/>\nThis is a great track.\u00c2\u00a0 Guest vocals by Chris Martin of <strong>Coldplay<\/strong> fame.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0A slow, heartfelt delivery makes it a definite &#8216;down&#8217; track, but kind of uplifting, too.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Spouse<\/strong>, <em>Telephrenic<\/em><br \/>\nNot sure why I made a note of this one.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s OK, but nothing to really write home about.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Potomac Accord<\/strong>, <em>Sunset On The Empire<\/em><br \/>\nSlow, heavy on the piano, and some shouted vocals over the top, give this a <strong>Silver Mount Zion<\/strong> feel, but with the accessibility of maybe <strong>Antarctica<\/strong> &#8211; I&#8217;d lay bets on them being Canadian.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Vines<\/strong><em>, Evil Town<\/em><br \/>\nThis is a different kettle of fish.\u00c2\u00a0 From the initial outburst of distorted guitar to the final squeal of feedback, this is first-class noise.\u00c2\u00a0 (The iTunes Store warns me it is &#8220;Explicit&#8221;, but it&#8217;s hard to tell from the distorted vocals.)\u00c2\u00a0 Better than anything on their next album, <em>Vision Valley<\/em>, which I did go out and buy.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Stands<\/strong><em>, The Way She Does<\/em><br \/>\nVery Retro.\u00c2\u00a0 The guitar on this owes a lot to <em>The Draize Train<\/em> by <strong>The Smiths<\/strong> (it&#8217;s on <em>Rank<\/em>), but the overall feel is that of a 60&#8217;s guitar freak-out, quite similar to <strong>The Coral<\/strong>, or <strong>Palace Of Oranges<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 Not bad at all!<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Castle Project<\/strong>, <em>In Frustration<\/em><br \/>\nAnother slow-burner.\u00c2\u00a0 Slow, steady pace and some pained vocals.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;m a sucker for pained vocals and earnest delivery (and no, Emo doesn&#8217;t do it for me &#8211; too manufactured).\u00c2\u00a0 And the build-up over the last minute and a half is great.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Frank Jordan<\/strong>, <em>To Never Have Without<\/em><br \/>\nPretty moody in the same way that <strong>Shannon Wright<\/strong> is, but with a reasonably fast pace.\u00c2\u00a0 And a decent length, too.\u00c2\u00a0 Three minutes of setting the scene, followed by a good\u00c2\u00a0four\u00c2\u00a0minutes of multi-layered guitar noise with a couple of interesting switches (and a last\u00c2\u00a060 seconds of seemingly unrelated accordion that would do <strong>Tom Waits<\/strong> proud).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jets To Brazil<\/strong>, <em>Mid-Day Anonymous<br \/>\n<\/em>Another one I&#8217;m not sure why I made a note of it.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s a bit American Alternative meets Post Punk, so not the kind of stuff that normally catches my ear.\u00c2\u00a0 Plus, <strong>Green Day<\/strong> do it much better.\u00c2\u00a0 Ho hum, at least I didn&#8217;t pay for it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Raveonettes<\/strong>, <em>That Great Love Sound<\/em><br \/>\nThis is a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">great<\/span> lift-me-up track.\u00c2\u00a0 Sure, it&#8217;s very (deliberately) retro, but it just hits the spot perfectly &#8211; a big, positive, confident swagger of a\u00c2\u00a0song.\u00c2\u00a0 Great for psyching up for a night on the town.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cat Power<\/strong>, <em>Good Woman<\/em><br \/>\nSlow, simple, and beautiful.\u00c2\u00a0 Everyone should listen to this at least once in their lives.\u00c2\u00a0 Probably not what most people would call a &#8216;classic&#8217;, but something in this moves me in the same way that <em>We Are Free Men<\/em> by <strong>Bright Eyes<\/strong> (which was strangely relegated to a B-side on the <em>There Is No Beginning To The Story<\/em> EP) does.\u00c2\u00a0 Must be something\u00c2\u00a0in the vocals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And that&#8217;s it for another month.\u00c2\u00a0 Ten generally great tracks, and all for free.\u00c2\u00a0 At least it beats the CDs the music glossies seem to insist on giving away free on the cover these days in a bid to boost sales.\u00c2\u00a0 My 3WK B-list still contains plenty of goodies, and I&#8217;m still adding to it almost daily, so I may well stick with this approach next
