Extended Warranties: Putting the ‘con’ in ‘consumer electronics’

Saturday, July 17th, 2010

At the risk of sounding older than my tender 43 years: They don’t make ‘em like they used to. Consumer electronics, that is. Last month my TV finally packed up (and within a month of getting my surround-sound in place, FFS!). This is a Toshiba 50″ plasma flat screen, which I bought for the not inconsiderable sum of $2,000 three years ago (actually as a 10-year anniversary present for the wife - ever the romantic, eh?). About a year ago one of the HDMI ports stopped working, which was irritating but not the end of the world (it has a […]

AT&T Are Shit

Monday, July 23rd, 2007

(Sorry, I can’t think of a witty title, because this just isn’t funny…)
About a month ago, a representative from AT&T called round offering me their Uverse service free on a couple of month’s trial.  This is a combined cable TV and internet service, and although I already used AT&T’s DSL service for my internet connection, I’d shied away from the cable TV service as a friend of ours round the corner had had bad experiences with AT&T.  The rep  told me that they had since upgraded their network to fibre-optic, and I’d have an optic cable running right into the […]

It started with the recent purchase (as a 10th wedding anniversary present) of a new TV - a 50″ Plasma HD TV, which now hangs on the wall above the fireplace (where it doesn’t look as […]

Top Of The Pops, Bottom Of The Ratings

Wednesday, June 28th, 2006

The BBC have announced that Top Of The Pops is to be axed.  For the non-Brits, Top Of the Pops is (or at least was) the flagship ‘music’ programme produced by the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation).  It has been airing weekly since 1964, and was for many of those years the only ‘youth-oriented’ programme produced by the BBC.  That the programme is being cancelled is a crime.  Top Of The Pops (TOTP) is one of the staples of the BBC output - along with the Queen’s Speech at Christmas and the Nine O’Clock News - and as such should be […]
